Volatility Breakout: Bollinger Squeeze + ATR Trigger

Volatility mean-reverts: extreme compression is usually followed by a burst. A volatility-breakout strategy "lies in wait in the calm and rides the burst." Crypto's alternation of wide chop and violence suits it well.

Two steps

  1. Spot the compression: Bollinger Bands narrow to their tightest (a squeeze), or ATR drops low — the market is storing energy;
  2. Confirm direction, then enter: wait for a candle body to break the squeeze range's upper or lower edge, go with the break, stop back inside the range.

Core discipline: don't pre-guess direction

A squeeze foretells "a move is coming," not the direction. Pre-betting direction is the strategy's biggest way to lose — you can get whipsawed both ways. Wait patiently for the break; better late than guessing.

Tip: add a volume or ADX filter to avoid entering on a low-volume fake break. In crypto, a squeeze often "fakes once then really goes" — use the fake-out filter to raise your win rate. Use adaptive ATR stops.
