Crypto Breakout Strategy and Filtering Fake-Outs

TradingView crypto breakout strategy illustration

Breakout trading is simple: enter with the trend when price breaks a key level. But crypto has tons of fake-outs — operators often lure longs/shorts to sweep stops, then reverse. Without a filter, a breakout strategy is a "buy-high-sell-low machine."

Triple filter for real breakouts

  1. Close confirmation: wait for a candle body to close beyond the level — don't enter on a wick poking through;
  2. Volume: a high-volume break is more credible; a low-volume break is usually fake;
  3. Hold on retest: after the break, price retests the level (now support) and doesn't fall back — the steadiest second entry.

The fake-out reversal

If price quickly reclaims inside the level after breaking (a fake-out), that's itself a strong signal — the original direction's stops got swept and momentum is spent, often a fast reversal. Pros deliberately trade the "fake-out reversal."

Tip: define levels with supply/demand zones or prior highs/lows. Put the stop at the invalidation (back inside the range). Better to wait for the retest and earn a bit less than to chase the first breakout candle.
