Cold/Hot Wallets and Fund Tiering: Move Most Assets Off Exchanges
Crypto's most expensive lesson is the same line, over and over: "Not your keys, not your coins." Exchange blow-ups, exit scams and hacks have wiped out users too many times. Fund tiering is basic self-protection.
Three tiers
- Cold wallet (hardware / offline): hold most long-term assets; keys offline, hacker-resistant;
- Hot wallet (mobile/browser): hold a small amount for daily use (on-chain interaction, small sums); online means risk;
- Exchange: only what's actively trading / needed soon; withdraw promptly when done.
Seed-phrase safekeeping
- Seed phrase/private key: never online, never photographed, never uploaded to the cloud;
- Physical offline backup (paper/metal), stored in separate locations, fire- and loss-proof;
- Anyone asking for your seed phrase is a scammer — official channels never ask.
Tip: buy a hardware wallet only from the official/authorized channel, never secondhand (may be pre-seeded with a backdoor). Verify packaging and firmware on arrival. For scams, see crypto scam detection.
